A master bathroom in Madinat Al Riyad, finished around a basin cut from the stone itself

What was there

The room came to us newly tiled and completely bare — large-format grey porcelain on the walls and floor, a low tiled ledge running along one side, and nothing else. No counter, no unit, no mirror.

That ledge is the reason this counter had to be made to measure rather than bought. It fixes the width of the alcove exactly, and it is not square to the wall behind it. A standard vanity top would have had to be cut down on site to fit, losing surface and leaving a joint against the tile.

What we made

A porcelain counter cut to the alcove, with the basin formed as a shallow channel in the surface itself rather than dropped in as a separate bowl. There is no rim and no sealed joint around a basin — water runs across the stone and away.

The stone turns down the exposed side as a waterfall edge, and rises at the back as an upstand so the tile line is never wet. The tap holes were drilled for the wall-fed mixer already chosen, so the plumbing stayed exactly where it was.

Beneath it, a handleless drawer unit in a dark finish, set back under the stone so the counter reads as the piece you see. Above it, a backlit oval mirror in a warm tone, sized to the counter rather than to the wall.

How it was done

We measured the alcove on site, including the ledge and the run of the wall behind it. The counter was then cut, profiled and finished in our own workshop in Hay Hoshi, Sharjah, and brought to Abu Dhabi and installed by our own team. Nothing was subcontracted.
